The ESRI Shapefile format is used by a number of ESRI and third party GIS products. The format actually consists of three data files: SHP Geometry, SHX Index, and DBF Database; and a number of optional files. MPSuperShape only requires the SHP file. The SHX file is ignored, if provided. The DBF data file is only read if it is available and if the SHP file consists of point features. The PRJ (projection) file is also used if provided.
MPSuperShape will use the projection and coordinate system specified in the PRJ file, if it is present. If this file is absent, MPSuperShape expects all coordinates to be geographic decimal longitude, latitude coordinates using the WGS84 geoid. MPSuperShape supports the newer "WKT style" PRJ files, and many of the older (Arc/Info 7.x) prj files. See the section on Projections and Coordinate Systems for more information.
MPSuperShape can import most shapefile shapes, but MapPoint cannot support all of the variations supported by shapefiles. MPSuperShape will ignore all "M" and "Z" values. Holes, rings, and complex shapes will be imported as individual shapes. All shapes are drawn using the current MapPoint default settings for color, line thickness, and pushpin symbol.
Points are imported as pushpins with the name "ESRI Point". MapPoint appends this name with a counter so that the pushpins can be distinguished from each other. If a DBF file is available, then MPSuperShape will read the data for each point feature and copy it to the corresponding pushpin's Memo field. The fields are concatenated together into one text field. DBF files are ignored for line and polygon features.
