Layer Types


Map data is drawn in layers. Each layer contains one type of information, e.g. roads, or customers, or lakes. Map layers can contain point, line, area, or raster data; but you cannot mix these in the same layer. For example, a map of water features would use a line layer for rivers and an area layer for lakes.

Typically a layer will contain a number of data fields (i.e. numeric and text data) for each geographic object.

Point Data

Point data can be represented by a single coordinate (two numbers) or an address. Therefore Maptitude can import point data from a non-geospatial format such as Microsoft Excel or a CSV file. This process is described on its own page.

Maptitude can also import point data from an existing geospatial data format.

Line and Area Data

An object in a line layer consists of a list of coordinates. These lines are also known as polylines or linestrings. They can be of any length, so a geospatial format has to be used. You cannot import line data from an Excel workbook or similar file.

The same applies to area layers. Areas are also known as polygons or shapes. An area object can consist of multiple shapes and ‘holes’ within these shapes. These definitions can be quite complex, and a geospatial format must be used.

How to import spatial data into your map.

Note that if you already have the line or shape definitions loaded (e.g. from a Maptitude Country Pack), you can join your scalar data to it. For example you could join your own sales information to the existing Zipcode layer.

Raster Data

Rasters are another name for bitmaps. Although vector (point, line, area) data is usually preferred for geospatial work because it is easily scaled and analyzed; sometimes you may only have raster data. This data might be scanned from print maps; represent a digital terrain model; or come from a remote sensing source such as satellite imagery.

Territory Data

Territories are created using an existing area layer. The definition can use an external data table, data fields on the area layer, or interactive point-and-click.
