Avoiding Areas

Sometimes a route will go through a place or area which you wish to avoid. For a single route, it is possible to drag the route in a better direction. However, it is also possible to define areas of the map that should be avoided. These ‘Avoid Areas’ can then be used for multiple routes and saved with a map.

Each avoid area is defined as a rectangle and appears as pale yellow on the map. To create an avoid area, draw a rectangle shape on the map over the area you wish to avoid:

Select the rectangle and right click to display the pop-up menu. Select Avoid area on this menu to convert the rectangle into an avoid area:

Here is the resulting map with the avoid area defined:

MapPoint will automatically re-calculate the route if you have a route displayed. Note how in the above example, the route now passes to the south (through Lake Charles), avoiding the yellow avoid area.

Is there a way to get Mappoint to AVOID making U-turns at each and every stop, I am a school bus driver, and making a u-turn in a 40 foot long school bus is not an option.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

    • Not that I know of. The best you can probably do, is to go through and modify the routes to avoid such manouveurs – eg. dragging a route, or moving a stop so that it isn’t on a side road that requires a U-turn.

A thought… is there a way to make Mappoint think all streets are ” divided ” roads? Since I have been placing bus stops via “Lat,Lon”, placing the stops on what we call “Near Side” of intersection. Streets that ARE devided, Mappoint will route you past the stop when coming the other directions and loop around on the nearest streets and come back to stop.

  • No you cannot. That would require modification of the road database, which is not possible.
