Setting a Pushpin’s Text Fields

After creating a pushpin, it is possible to set the pushpin’s title and text. Each pushpin has a popup window that displays the pushpin title (name) plus data fields or text. If this is not visible, it can be displayed by right-clicking on the pushpin and then selecting Show Information from the resulting popup menu:

The pushpin window (‘balloon’)  is split into two. The top section displays the title and consists of one light gray line. The remaining section will vary in height and store other information or text. To change the title, click on the top title line and type in the new title. Here is an example:

Next, you can enter the pushpin’s text. Dataset pushpins can display individual data fields in their balloons, but manually inserted pushpins can only display text. To change this text, click on the lower section of the balloon and type the text in. Here is an example:

This text can also include a hyperlink to a webpage. Do this by simply typing the hyperlink’s URL. MapPoint will automatically recognize the URL as a hyperlink and highlight it with blue text. Click on the hyperlink to go to the specified webpage. Here is an example:

Is there any way to show all the pushpin information for a dataset, instead of clicking on each one by one??

  • In MapPoint 2010, you can right-click on the pushpin set’s name in the legend. Options to open or close all the pushpin information ‘balloons’ are listed there.

Earlier versions require a third-party add-in such as Pushpin Tool.

Is it possible in MapPoint to replace the symbol of say 200 pushpins with a very small label? For instance, during import of addresses from Excel I could provide a unique identifier such as ‘aa’, ‘ab’, ‘ac’, etc and then have that show up in tiny text instead of the symbol. I would use the balloon text but it’s way too large (I have about 200 addresses that I visit in a single city)

To further explain, I visit about 200 addresses in a short period of 2-3 days, and I like to check off addresses as I visit each one. I like the ability to select my next destination simply by looking at a nearby favorite on my Nuvi 660 GPS and then after the visit crossing off that address on my printed map. But I find it difficult to associate a symbol on the printed map with a specific address, so in the past I’ve resorted to handwriting in tiny text near about 1/3rd of the symbols.

    • The way to do that would be to create a set of custom pushpin symbols and use these. The Multiple Symbol import method could be used to import them 8 symbols at a type – otherwise you’d have to do it manually or with a custom program.

Thanks Richard …. sounds like the only reasonable solution is a custom program. Importing 8 symbols at a time would be too time consuming.

I’m kind of surprised at the limitations Mappoint has in this area, but I suppose it is what it is. thanks for your comment and sorry for taking so long to check back for yours.

And you don’t have to open the balloon to use its associated hyperlink … just Ctrl+click on the pushpin. (MapPoint 2006, anyway)

In general, do your comments and tips about “Pushpins” apply to the types of pushpins that get created when you use the Data Mapping Wizard to a create a “Multiple Symbol” type map? I am trying to globally turn on all pushpin info the pushpins created via mapping wizard. Right clicking on the pushpin legend shows some options, but not the same pop up window you describe for pushpins.
