Legend & Overview

The Legend and Overview is the default Task Pane (displayed to the left of the main map area).

The top of the Legend and Overview is the Overview Map. This displays a small-scale overview map which shows the main map’s current position. It is often difficult to tell where the main map is located when it is zoomed-in, so this overview quickly shows you where on the Earth’s surface you are currently viewing. The current main map view area is shown with a blue outline on the overview map. The map view can be re-positioned by dragging the blue outline with the mouse (left button), or by clicking in the overview map to re-center it.

The rest of the task pane consists of a Legend, also known as a Key. This lists all symbols and shading on the current map with a name or label. When you plot datasets and pushpins, their names and symbols or shading will be listed here. Datasets in this legend can be selected and then edited by clicking the right mouse button.

The legend can get quite large because it also includes information for the base map. Therefore it can be ‘collapsed’ or expanded using the ‘+’ and ‘-’ symbols to the left of each section. Expanding the legend out for a default empty map, produces a legend as follows:

    Good day,
once data has been imported from Excel, is it possible to show the percentages on the map as well?
I’m asking because, for our Outbound Shipping Process, we have measured delivery percentages per country.
It works to import to data and have MapPoint adjust the colours based on the value in Excel, but is it also possible to show this value ( i.e. 97.6% ) in the country of destination in MapPoint?

    Kind regards
    pieter

    • You could divide the values in Excel (to give a fraction), or use the “Divide by” option in the Data Import Wizard.

You may also wish to look at the pie chart map styles.

        Hi Richard,
        thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, i am still struggling to get the percentages visible on the MapPoint Map.
When you move your mouse over the different countries the values become visible.
I.e. the score for France is 0.975866. When you put the cursor on France this will be shown, but is it possible to have this nr visible at all times? for all countries?

A second question is if it is possible to manually adjust the colours in the Legends.
There are 16 pre-defined colour combinations, but would it be possible to adjust these colours manually?

        Kind regards
        Pieter

I am using your software to place locations for company locations, manufacturing plants, and customer locations. I then used your drawing tool to place ovals with no fill over certain groups of those company, mfg, and customer locations. How do I put the oval into the legend/key in order for the customer to understand what it means?

    Thanks!

    Mike

    • I’m flattered: It isn’t my software but Microsoft’s! We (Winwaed Software Technology / Mapping-Tools.com) specialize in extensions for Microsoft MapPoint.

No you cannot add shape annotation to the legend. For presentation purposes (eg. slides or handouts), you could add the annotation using a drawing program of your choice.
